Google TV (and Android TV) boxes and streamers have been stuck at a mere 8GB of storage for a long time, but things are finally changing as new hardware hits the market including the new Xiaomi TV Box S which jumps up to 32GB.
Quietly announced earlier this week, the new Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) succeeds the company’s last set-top box release in 2023, which was its first with Google TV. This new streamer has virtually the same form factor, but with some key upgrades including an Amlogic S905X5M chipset which Xiaomi notes brings 25% faster CPU performance and 130% faster GPU performance.
The biggest area of improvement, though, is probably in storage, as this is the latest Google TV box to recognize that 8GB is simply not enough. The Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) offers 32GB of storage, the same amount as the Google TV Streamer and even more than you’ll find in the Nvidia Shield TV. It’s a welcome upgrade, and one that we hope to see even more across the Google TV ecosystem. 32GB is slowly becoming a standard, as other 2025 releases from Nexon, Mediabox, and others also include 32GB of storage.
That said, this box also comes with a mere 2GB of RAM, an outdated spec in 2025. That’s the same amount of memory found in the Chromecast with Google TV (released in 2020), and apparently the minimum allowed for Google TV now. Google also reportedly set 16GB of storage as the minimum back in 2023.
Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) also ditches the built-in 3.5mm audio jack and adds Wi-Fi 6.
Pricing hasn’t been announced, but the 2nd Gen box is still sold for $69.99.
